|With the introduction of Intel's "Centrino"
technology a few years ago, we decided this was a good enough reason to
start building custom Notebook PCs for our customers. Since then, we've
teamed up with one of our distributors to configure, obtain parts, and
construct PCs having specifications suited to your needs.
What originally defined a "Centrino" computer? The specifications listed below were the original requirements. Currently, the new dual core CPUs have replaced the Pentium M, new motherboard/chipset combinations have been introduced, and the Wi-Fi module has been upgraded to include 802.11g capabilities. If your laptop/notebook contained the following three elements, your Notebook PC could have been "Centrino" qualified:
It has an Intel Pentium M CPU. The Intel® Pentium® M processor, in conjunction with the Intel® 855 Chipset Family and the Intel® PRO/Wireless 2100 network connection, is a key component of Intel® Centrino™ mobile technology. The Intel Pentium M processor is available at speeds of up to 1.70 GHz, and includes performance enhancements such as a power-optimized 400 MHz system bus, Micro-Ops Fusion and Dedicated Stack Manager for faster execution of instructions at lower power.
It includes the The Intel® 855 chipset. The 855 chipset family is part of Intel® Centrino™ Mobile Technology and is designed to deliver breakthrough performance at lower power. The Intel® 855PM Chipset is a discrete memory controller hub. The Intel® 855GM Chipset is an integrated graphics memory controller hub.
Wi-Fi Connectivity. The Intel® PRO/Wireless 2100 network connection is the integrated Wireless LAN (WLAN) solution for Intel® Centrino™ mobile technology. The Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 network connection works in concert with the other Intel Centrino mobile technology components to provide freedom and flexibility to work and play on the go without hunting for a phone jack, network cable, or plugging in a special card. Get connected through wireless LAN networks in your home, in the office, and in wireless LAN hotspots in airports, hotels and coffee shops.

This particular Centrino notebook, about 1" thick, weighed in around only 5 lbs, included a built-in CD-R/DVD drive, three USB2.0 ports, a firewire port, an external monitor port, audio in/out ports, and a power connector. A built-in touch sensitive pointing device was available for use where a USB connected mouse isn't feasible. Three-way communications were integrated into the system, including a telephone modem, a LAN connection, and a 2.4 GHz 802.11b Wi-Fi WLAN Intel 2100 module used to connect to either your home wireless LAN or...to a neighborhood restaurant, or hotel's Wi-Fi WLAN (hotspot) during a visit or meeting there.
